Botox FAQ

How does Botox work?

Botox works by blocking signals from your nerves to your muscles. These muscles aren't able to contract anymore. That's important because wrinkles are caused by these same muscles contracting time after time over a number of years. Scientists discovered this when they observed that patients with blepharospasm (uncontrolled blinking) and strabismus (lazy eye) reacted well to treatment with Botox. In 2002, it gained approval by the Federal Drug Administration for use in cosmetic procedures.

What is Botox made of?

Botox is made from a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. The botulinum in the bacterium causes paralysis. Over the course of many years of study, they discovered a way to use it to their advantage. Their findings were put through many different tests and, after the results satisfied the Federal Drug Administration, it was released onto the market.

Can I exercise after Botox?

The current medical advice is for patients not to exercise for at least six hours after treatment.

How long does Botox take to work?

For most patients, the positive effects of Botox can be observed in as little as 72 hours to a week from treatment.

What are the health effects of Botox?

The immediate side-effects of using Botox can include flu-like symptoms (including nausea and headaches), facial pain, and muscle weakness. Research backs up on-the-ground experience of practitioners in that it states that these side-effects disappear after continued use.

Botox and pregnancy?

If you're pregnant, you're breastfeeding, or you have a neurological disorder, please do not use Botox.

Is Botox dangerous?

Botox has been available for use in cosmetic treatments since 2002. There is little or no evidence of harm caused by Botox.
